Hooded Merganser

While at the Wetlands in Arundel the other day I spotted these fascinating wildfowl. I had not photographed them before so was eager to capture an image of them.

The male was displaying his plumage frequently, making it fairly easy to capture this photograph with his outstretched wings. This black and white plumage can only be seen on the male during the breeding season. At other times of the year it looks more like the brown female bird.

The female hooded merganser was not far away. However she did not feel the need to put on such a display!
