Finding peace and mindfulness in times of turmoil
The world is in a strange place right now. We have all survived the first wave of a global pandemic, and wait with bated breath to see what happens next. My solution for dealing with my mixed emotions has been to turn to my photography. Art can be therapeutic for many people and is often used as a form of mindfulness.
mindfulness and photography
It has been a little difficult to get inspired while my thoughts have been all over the place. However, I have discovered the art of just watching. I take my camera out for a walk and find a place to wait and watch the world.
With such a busy life, I often feel that when I do get time to go out with my camera I should “achieve” a great shot. This can take the fun out of the process.
I have been using mindfulness techniques to allow myself to stop and slow down. Taking the pressure off to create an image, and just watch. Observe what is going on around me.
Playing with techniques
Taking the time to slow down and not worry about the results and given me some freedowm to play with different techniques. It has also allowed me to immerse myself and take a break from my own thoughts.
One technique which I have referred to before is intentional camera movement (ICM). This is where you slow your shutter speed and move the camera as you take the photograph.
