Abstraction shooting through a lens ball
One of the challenges set for the 52 frames project was shooting through something. I decided to dig out my lens ball and shoot an abstract flower through it. Today I thought I would show you behind the scenes!
Shooting through a lens ball
This is a technique that I still find a little tricky! The ball distorts the subject so it is challenging to get an interesting image, which is mostly out of focus.
It took me a while to set the scene. The lens ball acts like a wide-angle lens so it captures elements of the scene from multiple angles. This means you can get unwanted reflections in the ball. I started off by laying out a black card to minimise this effect. I then portioned my camera, lens ball and flower.
The next stage is just to play around. Moving the flower around and adjusting the distance between the ball and the camera can create different looks.
Shooting the image
Once I was happy with the basic layout, it was time to get shooting. I shone the light from my phone onto the flower to brighten it up. I then took lots of images from different angles, and adjust the flower.
This was my favourite image of the bunch:
I didn’t do much editing to this image. I cropped and tweaked the levels a little. Here is what it looked like straight off-camera:
