Behind the scenes in creating an up-close spider leg image
I have been playing with my microscope again. This time I had an up-close look at a spider leg. This is not for the arachnophobes out there!

It is always fun to find a new subject to study under the microscope. This week I found an expired spider in the bathroom and couldn’t resist taking a look.
This was a tricky subject to photograph as the leg was quite thick. This meant that the focal point was very narrow. I had to use a different technique to get more of the subject in focus.

Creating the close-up spider leg image
You may recall I shared how I used focus stacking to get a sharp image of a fly wing.
I used the same technique to create this image. I used 36 separate images to create a focused image from back to front.
It took a little bit of tweaking to get the whole image sharp. The auto stacking feature in Photoshop couldn’t handle all the details on the hairs. So I played around with manually bringing out the areas in focus.
The final stage was to edit the colours and contrast to make it pop!
