Levitation tricks

Creating the illusion of objects floating using photography is really fun. For one of the themes in the 52 frames project, we were challenged to practice our levitation tricks! Why not check out my September 24 images, where this photograph was featured.

Mysterious floating candle!

Levitation can be created in a number of ways. One way to do this is to photograph your background. Then capture your subject sitting on a chair (or anything to raise them off the ground). Next, you mask away the chair using a layer mask to make the background visible.

Another way to achieve this, is to photograph the elements of your image and mask out the background. The subjects can then be inserted over any background of your choosing. This was the option I used for creating my floating candle image.

How I created this image

I photographed my hand against a plain background. Then I photographed the candle in the same lighting conditions.

The background for the candle was removed using a layer mask. I then overlaid the candle over the hand image. To make the image more dynamic, I tilted the candle. Then I used the liquify tool to change the shape of the flame.

Finally, I added shadows and used a brush to add textures to give the image a magical feel!
