Mixed media art – an experiment!
I have take on a new hobby! Watching my kids getting enjoyment from sketching I decided that it was something I wanted to try. The next thing I know, I am using the sketching in my photography and producing mixed media art!
Sketching meets photography
I was one of those people who always said I couldn’t draw. The fact of the matter is I hadn’t really given it a chance since school. Back then I was more impatient and if something didn’t work first time I would give up! These days I have learnt to take my time when it comes to my creative projects. Also I do not worry if something doesn’t work – it is more about the process of learning than the final results!
With this in mind I have found great enjoyment from doodling in a sketch book. In particular I have found I like creating portraits. This is surprsing as it is not my favourite subject to photograph!
As I had been practicing drawing eyes, I came up with the idea of combining one of my eye sketches with a self portrait. So having taken the photograph, I then sketch one of my eyes in my sketch book.

Creating some mixed media art
The next stage was to combine these two images in Photoshop. I used masks to remove sections of the photographs that I didn’t want visible.
I added some paper textures and colour grading to give a more creative look to the image. I was quite pleased with the results!
