Partial solar eclipse from the UK

Last month we were lucky enought to witness a partial solar eclipse over the UK. Here is how I captured this solar event.

Watching the solar eclipse

On Saturday 29th March this year, a partial solar eclipse occurred. This was visible in the UK, with the moon covering up to 40% of the sun, peaking around 11:00 am. You can find out more about it here.

An eclipse occurs when the sun moon and earth are all lined up. The moon passes in front of the sun, casting a shadow.

Photographing the solar eclipse

To view an eclispe the viewer should wear special safety glasses to prevent damage to the eyes. This level of caution is the same when photographing the sun.

To capture this image I used a solar filter over my lens. This filter cuts out a large percentage of the UV light, allowing the camera to be pointed directly at the sun.

I like how the sun spots can be seen as well as the moon covering sun.
