Dublin Days Part 3: Emigration museum and the Jeanie Johnston famine ship
Last month I shared some images I photographed on my trip to Dublin. Today, I have another installment, the day we learnt more about the history and motives for emigration from Ireland.
History of Emigration in Ireland
Ireland has had a complex history of emigration over the years. I do not feel qualified to talk about it all here. However, I did learn more from our visit to EPIC and the Jeanie Johnston while we were in Dublin.
The Jeanie Johnston famine ship started out life as a cargo ship, before later transporting passengers overseas to start a new life during the famine. The ship we visited was a reconstruction, based on plans of the original ship.

What made the story so facinating was the integrety of the ships captain. He didn’t transport people just to make money. He cared about his passengers. This was evident by there not being any fatalities in the time it was a working ship.

It was a facisnating journey through the history of Ireland and its people. One I would highly recommend if you ever find yourself in Ireland.
