My Ghibli Adventure in Japan

For many years, I’ve dreamed of stepping into the magical worlds Studio Ghibli created. On my trip to Japan, that dream came true. From wandering through the Ghibli Museum to spending far too much in the shops (oops) and even curling up with cats in a Ghibli-inspired café, it honestly felt like I was living in one of Miyazaki’s films.

The Ghibli Museum

Visiting the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka felt less like going to a museum and more like walking into a storybook. The building itself looked like it could’ve been plucked straight out of My Neighbor Totoro—colorful, whimsical, and full of little surprises around every corner.

I loved the spiral staircases, peeking through stained glass windows, and stumbling upon hidden rooms. The life-sized Catbus was everything I hoped it would be (unfortunately limited to the under 12’s – disappointing for the whole family!), and seeing the original sketches and storyboards gave me chills. It was such a beautiful reminder of just how much love and detail goes into every frame of a Ghibli film.

One of my favorite parts was watching the short film that’s exclusive to the museum. It felt like a secret gift only for those lucky enough to be there. They don’t allow photos inside, which at first made me sad, but honestly, it made me live in the moment. I’ll always carry those memories in my head instead of on my phone.

Shopping (Too Much)

Okay, confession time: I went a little overboard in the Ghibli shops. But can you blame me? Everywhere I turned, Totoro was staring at me with those big eyes, Jiji was perched on mugs and keychains, and I just couldn’t resist.

Fmily purchases included:

  • A giant catbus plush (no regrets, even if it barely fitted in my suitcase).
  • Spirited Away trinkets I definitely didn’t need but absolutely wanted.
  • A Jiji mug which I am scared to drink from because I of the risk of breaking it.

My wallet may still be crying, but my heart is so, so happy.

The Cat Café

Prior to the museum, I stumbled upon a cat café that felt like a cozy Ghibli hideaway. The magical interiors, greenery, and quiet atmosphere made it feel like Whisper of the Heart had come to life. I sipped on a fruit milkshake, while cats lazily wandered around and curled up next to me. It was honestly the most comforting way to start the day—like wrapping myself in a warm, fuzzy blanket of Ghibli magic.

Looking Back

Thinking back on that day still makes me smile. There was something so special about immersing myself in Ghibli’s world while actually being in Japan. It reminded me why I fell in love with those films in the first place—the sense of wonder, the attention to detail, and the way they make you feel both nostalgic and hopeful at the same time.

I came home with a suitcase full of Ghibli treasures and a heart even fuller with memories. And honestly, I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat.
